You have seen the reality shows, now learn the techniques first hand. Discover the subtle keys to survival including risk assessment, planning, and decision making. Learn the basics of shelter, food and water that can help you survive those crucial hours in the wilderness. Practice hands on with fire making techniques such as the bow and spindle fire by friction and other innovative methods. Beginner Kayak Classes August 7, September 25 and October 9 Time: 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Cost $25 per person. Join instructors from the American Canoe Association (ACA) to learn the basics of kayaking. In this workshop students are given an introduction to kayaking skills. No experience needed and all equipment is provided. Classes will be held at the South Martinsville river canoe access or Beaver Creek Reservoir. Fall Campout Weekend Paddle and Overnight October 15 and 16 Cost $75 person Time: 1:00 p.m. Saturday until 12:00 noon Sunday Includes boat and equipment rental, dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning. Paddle from South Martinsville to Sports Complex on Saturday. Gear will be shuttled by Martinsville Parks and Recreation Department to the Sports Complex where dinner will be provided along with a campfire that evening. We will camp and have breakfast the next before continuing the paddle to Mitchell Bridge. Dinner and Breakfast provided by Martinsville Parks and Recreation. Group Paddle Sports Complex to Mitchell Bridge September 17 9:00am – 2:00pm Rental Cost: Kayaks $30 person, Canoes $20 person Shuttle Only: $5 person Age: Teens and up. Take a guided trip along a remote section that features Eggleston Falls, one of the best spots on the Smith River. Join us for a fun and relaxing day on the Smith. Whether you have never been in a canoe/kayak before or have been doing it all your life, you can be sure this trip will be fun and exciting. Space is limited so please sign up quickly. This guided trip will begin at the Martinsville Sports Complex and end at Mitchell Road bridge. For more information and to register for any class or trip call 276-252-0701.
